When to use a Tinted Respirator?
At Parcil Safety, we include multiple tinted respirator options in most of our full face respirator and gas mask models. But a common question we get, is “when should I use a tinted respirator?”. This strongly depends on the setting you are working in, the application you’re performing, and whether you’re trying to decrease brightness or increase contrast. But before we get into answering some of these questions, let’s talk about the different kinds of tint options we offer. We offer clear, light amber, smoke black, and three different mirrored tints – inferno red, arctic blue, and burnt bronze. The clear is our standard lens used in multiple settings, while the light amber increases visual acuity and contrast between options, and then both the smoke black reduce glare and brightness as well as provide UV protection.
Read below for more information when to use each tint, or check out our comparison chart down at the bottom of the article!
Clear
Obviously, this is our most common tint and is what we originally launched our respirators with. We have these in every full face respirator model. You can shop these HERE.
When to use a clear full face respirator?
A clear lens full face respirator is typically worn in situations where there is a need for full-face respiratory protection along with unobstructed vision. Our clear lenses let through 100% of natural light. Here are some scenarios where a clear lens full face respirator might be appropriate:
- Hazardous airborne contaminants: When working in environments where there are significant airborne hazards, such as toxic chemicals, gases, or particulate matter, a clear lens full face respirator can provide comprehensive respiratory protection. The clear lens allows for unobstructed vision, ensuring that you can see clearly while being protected from the respiratory hazards.
- Infectious disease control: In healthcare settings or situations where there is a risk of exposure to infectious diseases or biological agents, a clear lens full face respirator can offer both respiratory and eye protection. It helps prevent the inhalation of airborne pathogens while also shielding the eyes from potential splashes or droplets.
- Industrial painting or spraying: During tasks that involve industrial painting, spraying of chemicals, or other activities with airborne particulates, a clear lens full face respirator is often used. It provides a barrier against inhaling harmful fumes, dust, or overspray, while allowing for clear vision to ensure accurate work.
- Emergency response: In emergency response scenarios, such as firefighting or dealing with chemical spills, a clear lens full face respirator is commonly used. It offers full-face protection against respiratory hazards and provides clear vision, allowing responders to navigate hazardous environments safely.
Light Amber
The next one we want to talk about is a light amber lens. We have these in the PD-100, PD-101 and ST-100X Full Face models (you can scroll down for link to any of these products).
When to use a light amber full face respirator?
A light amber respirator, or a respirator with a light amber tinted lens, can be used in specific situations where enhanced visibility and contrast are beneficial. Our light amber lens lets through about 93% of light Here are a few scenarios where a light amber respirator might be appropriate:
- Low-light conditions: In work environments with poor lighting or reduced visibility, a light amber respirator can help improve contrast and make it easier to see details. This can be useful in industries such as construction, mining, or maintenance work conducted in dimly lit areas.
- Hazy or smoky environments: When working in environments with smoke, haze, or airborne particles that can affect visibility, a light amber tinted lens can help filter out certain wavelengths of light and reduce glare. This can improve visibility and make it easier to see through the haze or smoke.
- Indoor lighting conditions: In some indoor work settings, such as laboratories or workshops with specific lighting conditions, a light amber tinted lens may be recommended. It can help reduce glare from bright artificial lighting sources, such as fluorescent lights, and enhance visual clarity.
- Eye strain reduction: If you experience eye strain or discomfort due to prolonged exposure to bright lights, a light amber respirator can help alleviate some of these symptoms by filtering out certain wavelengths of light.
Smoke Black and Mirrored Tinted
Parcil Safety offer’s smoke black lens options as well as three mirrored tinted lens options which come in Inferno Red, Arctic Blue, and Burnt Bronze.
When to use a smoke black or mirrored tinted full face respirator mask?
A tinted respirator is typically used in situations where there is a need for respiratory protection along with eye protection. The tinted visor or lens on the respirator helps shield the eyes from harmful light, glare, or bright conditions while providing respiratory protection. Here are a few scenarios where a tinted respirator might be appropriate:
- Welding: When performing welding tasks, bright light and sparks can pose a risk to the eyes. A tinted respirator with a built-in welding shield can provide both eye and respiratory protection. (NOTE: Our tints are not rated for welding application, yet..)
- Outdoor work: In certain outdoor work environments, such as construction sites or agricultural settings, workers may be exposed to bright sunlight, dust, or other particles. A tinted respirator can protect against airborne hazards while reducing glare and protecting the eyes.
- Grinding or cutting: During tasks that involve grinding, cutting, or using power tools, there may be a risk of flying debris, sparks, or intense light. A tinted respirator with a face shield can offer combined eye and respiratory protection.
- Chemical handling: Some chemical substances can be harmful if they come into contact with the eyes or are inhaled. In situations where both eye and respiratory protection are necessary, a tinted respirator with appropriate filters can be used.
It's important to note that the specific requirements for respiratory protection, eye protection, and tint level may vary depending on the specific task, workplace regulations, and safety standards. It is crucial to follow the guidelines provided by your employer, safety regulations, and any applicable industry standards when determining the appropriate use of a tinted respirator.
