What Is the Best Respirator Mask for Everyday Use? - Parcil Safety

Not all respirator masks are the same. Some offer better protection against hazardous gases, chemicals, emissions, and particles than others. If you need to protect yourself or your workers against these threats, you must choose a mask that is designed to shield you while accommodating your other needs.

Scientific studies have shown that respirator mask user safety and satisfaction depend on their filtration efficiency, comfort level, and type. Given this data and the exposure risks associated with your daily work environment, you should better understand which respirator mask offers the most protection for everyday use.

Below is an overview of the top six key considerations when choosing the best respirator mask:

1) Filtration Efficiency

Many people assume that N95 masks have the highest filtration efficiency. Government health agencies and healthcare officials recommended them for protection during the COVID-19 pandemic. That is why they are frequently worn in medical facilities or other environments with high pollution and viral particles in the air.

N95 masks only cover the bottom half of the face and filter 95% of airborne particles, leaving a 5% chance that some could still enter your respiratory system. On the other hand, P100 masks filter 99.97% of airborne particles, giving you more protection than the N95 masks. P100 masks are half-face respirators like the N95 masks, but they are reusable, unlike the N95 masks. All you need to do is purchase new filters for the P100 masks.

Of course, if you need complete facial protection in industrial environments with extremely high levels of hazardous or toxic airborne particles, wear a full-face respirator. This will protect your eyes, mouth, and nose from harmful airborne elements. Some of the best full-face respirators include the PD-100 (good against organic vapors and particulates) and the NB-100B (ideal in heavy construction and industrial settings).

2) Comfort and Fit

Another key consideration is the comfort and fit of your respirator mask. If you wear the mask all day, you’ll want it to feel comfortable and fit well on your face as you work. Otherwise, you’ll get distracted throughout the day by your discomfort. Plus, a mask that doesn’t fit well on your face won’t protect you as well as one that does. Keep that in mind.

Therefore, look for respirator masks with adjustable straps to accommodate heads of different sizes. Many high-quality respirator masks, such as the PD-100 respirators, have a five-point adjustable head strap to ensure maximum stability. That will prevent the mask from siding off or having to be readjusted in a contaminated environment.

Focus on the weight of the respirator mask, too. A heavy mask will pull down your face and head, putting additional stress on your neck and posture. Wear a lightweight mask that doesn’t pull down your head as much to avoid neck and spinal pain. Any mask weighing under 20 ounces is considered lightweight.

3) Reusable vs. Disposable

Is it better to choose a reusable or disposable respirator mask? It depends on how often you need to use it. If you only need a mask for short-term protection, you can use an N95 disposable mask for convenience. It quickly slides over your nose and mouth to shield it from airborne particles and droplets. An N95 mask will maintain its filtration efficiency for up to 24 hours after putting it on for the first time.

A reusable respirator mask, such as the P100, is better for everyday use and reduces long-term costs. Although a reusable mask initially costs more than a disposable mask, it offers more protection, versatility, and longevity. So, you will not need to keep purchasing new masks because you can keep reusing them repeatedly. The only thing you will need to replace are the air filters for the reusable mask, which are inexpensive.

4) Environment-Specific Protection

Think about the specific dangers in the environment. That will help you decide whether to use the P-series or N-series filters.

For example, if you need protection in an oily environment, a P95 filter can protect your respiratory system from organic vapors, oily particulates, and non-oily particulates. Its 95% filtration efficiency should be enough to protect you in most oily environments. If you need 99.97% filtration efficiency, choose the P100 filter for protection in more severe environments. There is not much of a cost difference between the two.

The “P” filter rating designation signifies “oil resistance,” whereas the “N” filter rating pertains to non-oil particulates, such as dust, dirt, smoke, fumes, or viral particles. Going back to the COVID-19 example, the N95 mask offers 95% filtration efficiency in any crowded environment where an infected person could potentially transmit the virus through the air. An N95 mask also protects construction sites and other dirty places.

5) Breathability

A common complaint about respirator masks' high filtration efficiency is their reduced breathability. Some people find the thicker filter material makes breathing more difficult, especially when wearing them all day. Environmental protection won’t mean much if a person passes out from a lack of oxygen.

Fortunately, highly efficient respirator masks are made with innovative fabric and exhalation valves to improve user breathability. These masks may be more suitable for people with breathing issues. However, they must be used in an environment where you’re not around other unmasked people because the exhalation valves could release unfiltered air onto them.

6) Reputable Retailers and Brands

Beware of counterfeit respirator masks that circulate in specific marketplaces. These masks don’t have nearly the same filtration efficiency as genuine masks. If you inadvertently use a counterfeit mask in a hazardous setting, you risk your health and safety.

The trick is to look for respirator masks from reputable retailers and brands like Parcil Safety. The website offers various full-face and half-face masks that provide suitable protection in industrial, commercial, tactical, and residential environments. You can filter your search by application, attachment type, filtration rating, or model.
